Description

Rudge Farmhouse, built around 1830-1840, is a brick farmhouse with a slate roof, designed in an L-shape. The main block consists of two rooms with a central staircase, facing southeast, and a kitchen and service block positioned at right angles behind the left side. The building has end stacks on the main block and an outer lateral stack for the kitchen. It stands two storeys tall with a symmetrical three-window front. The central entrance features a six-panel door with an overlight that has glazing bars, along with panelled reveals and a moulded doorcase topped with an entablature. The window embrasures have gauged brick heads and chamfered reveals, with all windows being three-light designs that include roll-moulded mullions and cast iron casements made up of 21 small rectangular panes each. The farmhouse has deep projecting eaves and hipped roofs on either side, which are flanked by tall chimney shafts. The front garden is enclosed by iron railings set on rubble footings, with spear-headed shafts and gate posts adorned with anthemion heads. This farmhouse closely resembles Wellparks Farmhouse in Crediton, which is also part of the Buller Estate.
