Description
Fordton Bridge is a road bridge over the River Yeo, likely built in the 18th century, though it may be older. The bridge was widened on the east side in the 20th century. It features volcanic ashlar stone for the arches and cutwaters, while the rest is made of volcanic rubble and some 20th-century concrete. The bridge has four spans with segmental arches that have chamfered double arch rings. The cutwaters between the arches extend up to the parapet, creating refuges. The road and parapet rise towards the center, and the coping is steeply weathered on both sides. The east side was widened in the 20th century with flat concrete lintels and buttresses, although the parapet was rebuilt to resemble the original design. An earlier bridge at this location was noted as being in decay in 1668.
