Description

The footbridge immediately west of Crediton Railway Station was built in 1878 for the London and South Western Railway (LSWR). It features rock-faced grey limestone piers with Bathstone dressings, a plate girder iron bridge, and timber steps. Each pier contains a small storeroom and supports two flights of steps leading up to the bridge; the west side has landings, while the east side leads directly onto the station platforms. The east side of the bridge is unfloored and enclosed with cast iron railings.

The piers are designed with clasping buttresses and parapets that have plain coping. Each storeroom has a chamfered doorway on the west side and a crank-arched chamfered window on the outer face, which includes a four-pane sash window. Above the south window of the south pier, there is a chamfered recessed panel with a shield inscribed "L. & S.W.R.Y. 1878." The flights of steps on the west side are supported by four cast iron columns with fluted capitals. It is noted that the bridge was formerly roofed over, according to information from a railway worker.

Inside, the storerooms are simple with brick barrel-vaulted roofs. The bridge is part of a group of 19th-century railway buildings and reflects the complex early history of the railway line, which began in 1838 and was known as the 'Vicar of Bray Railway.' The Exeter and Crediton Railway, established by an act in 1845, was leased to the Bristol and Exeter Railway, which converted it to broad gauge and opened it on May 12, 1851, before the LSWR took over the lease in 1862.
