Description
Gays and Drews is a house, formerly a farmhouse, dating from the mid-17th century, with an earlier plan form. It is constructed of plastered cob and rubble, with brick stacks and a slate roof, which was originally thatch. The north gable end was rebuilt in 19th-century brick. The building has a three-room and through passage plan, with an inner room to the left (south). It is two storeys high, featuring four rooms on the first floor. A newel stair turret projects at the rear (west) of the hall, and the house faces east. The front has four windows, with a 19th-century door leading to the passage and 20th-century French windows opening into the hall. The outer rooms have iron casements, while the first floor features 19th-century casements. Some original features are still visible, including an ovolo-moulded ceiling beam in the inner room, a hall fireplace at the upper end made of brick with an oak lintel that is chamfered with scroll stops, and a double door frame at the stairhead that is chamfered with ornate scroll stops. The inner room contains a 19th-century brick kitchen fireplace that backs onto the hall. Other early features may be concealed within the structure.
