Description

Broadgate Farm is a former farmhouse, now divided into two houses, dating from the late 16th to early 17th century. It was significantly altered in the 19th century and again around 1972. The farmhouse is built of plastered cob on stone footings, with volcanic trap and brick stacks, and has a slate roof, originally thatched. Originally designed with a three-room plan and a through-passage, the inner room to the south-west is now part of No.1. The farmhouse faces a cobbled courtyard to the south-east. It is two storeys high throughout. The roof is hipped on the left and steps down to the right of centre. A large stone lateral stack is situated in the hall. The original cross-passage door is on the right-hand side. The front has an irregular facade with 5 windows, featuring 20th-century iron casements. Very little of the original fabric remains visible inside. The hall retains chamfered beams with unusual facetted stops.
