Description
This building is a barn and adjoining linhay located about 4 metres west of Venn Farmhouse, dating from the mid to late 19th century. It features walls made of red sandstone and mudstone rubble, with some brick in the linhay, and has a slate roof. The structure is L-shaped, surrounding the north and west sides of the farmyard.
The north range is a large bank barn that includes a shippon in the basement, while the lower west range is the linhay. The barn has a gable end with a central projecting porch that includes a clock face under a gabled roof. Below the clock face is a slatted window, which is believed to have replaced a large loading bay. At ground level, there are seven segmental arches, with three on either side of the porch leading into the shippon. There is one window placed irregularly on either side of the porch, and to the right, there is a gable-roofed dormer. All openings feature segmental arches made of purple mudstone with grey mudstone springers and a projecting keystone. The left window is an original two-light window with a stop-chamfered mullion featuring scroll stops. A similar design is used for the lintel over the rear double doors. The barn retains its original king post roof.
The west range is an open-fronted seven-bay linhay of Alcocks Type T1, with posts resting on stone pads that rise to support king post trusses. The posts are also chamfered with step stops. The linhay originally extended at least one bay further south.
