Description

The building is a barn located approximately 15 meters east of Hacra Farmhouse, likely dating from the 17th and early 18th centuries, with the shippon probably from the 19th century. It is constructed of large, roughly-coursed sandstone rubble with quoins and features stone slate roofs on two levels. The barn has a linear plan made up of two ranges connected by a short link, built end-to-end at right angles to a slope, facing west on a north-south axis, with the shippon situated at the rear of the southern range.

The larger and taller northern range, likely five bays, includes a doorway at the north end with a humped monolith lintel, and a diagonal crack in the wall above this. Next to the doorway, there is a flight of stone steps leading up to a square-headed loft doorway with a segmental monolith lintel, and a chamfered one-light window to the left. The center of this range features slit breathers on two levels, and at the southern end, there is a notable segmental-arched wagon doorway with a chamfered dressed surround, a square-headed doorway at a lower level next to the corner, and a small two-light chamfered mullion window above it. The north gable wall has a pair of chimney corbels at the apex.

The link at the southern end is one bay and two low storeys, slightly set back, and has external steps leading to a loft doorway, with a doorway located beneath the steps. The lower southern range consists of three bays with random through-stones and small square breathers. It features an offset wagon doorway with a shallow segmental head and very long rubble voussoirs, along with a drip-band, a loading doorway above to the left, and a small one-light window at the left end of the upper floor. The south gable wall has a small blocked opening with rubble voussoirs similar to the wagon doorway. At the rear, the north range has two loading doorways, and its southern bay is overlapped by the added full-height lean-to shippon, which includes doorways at the south end and six square windows along the side. The interior has not been inspected, but the barn forms a good group with Hacra Farmhouse.
