Description

Raw Ridding Farmhouse and attached barn dates from the late 17th or early 18th century, with additions and alterations made in the mid to later 18th century. It was recently refurbished and is now used as a house and store. The building is constructed of sandstone rubble; the main house is of random rubble with large quoins, painted white, while the barn is of roughly-coursed rubble. Both have a roof of stone slate.

The house follows a cruciform plan; it consists of a single-depth, two-unit main range facing south, with a large gabled porch to the front and a broad, gabled rear wing, plus a lean-to in the west angle. The exterior features a stone slate drip-course that is interrupted in the centre by a two-storey porch. The porch has a square-headed outer doorway and a square window on the first floor. To the left of the porch are two similar windows at ground floor, with another above the first of these. Further to the right is an inserted doorway, followed by a two-light casement window and another first-floor window above it. All windows have been altered. A large square chimney is situated at the left gable, and a smaller ridge chimney is located at the junction with the barn. The barn, continuing to the right, has a segmental-headed wagon doorway with rubble voussoirs and a stone slate dripband in the second bay. To the left of this doorway is a window and another doorway, with a single-storey wing to the right.

The rear of the house has a broad gabled service wing with three irregularly disposed windows, including a cross-window to the staircase, and a blocked single-light window to the right. A lean-to fills the west angle and incorporates a large rectangular chimney.

The interior of the left-hand house section has large lateral beams with exposed joists, and a large rectangular stone fireplace. An open-well staircase is located in the rear wing, featuring a closed string, square newels, turned balusters, and a deep moulded handrail. Fielded panel partitioning is found on the landing, including a door to the room in the northeast corner of the rear wing, which has matching ceiling panelling.
