Description

The Hennery-Piggery and attached privy is a mid to late 19th century hen and pig house. It features rubble sandstone construction and a graduated stone slate roof with clay ridge tiles. The building has an L-shaped plan, with the piggery located on the ground floor and the hennery on the first floor, along with an attached privy at the east end.

The exterior consists of two storeys of traditional animal housing with a pitched roof and stonework arranged in courses, accented by large quoins. The south elevation includes a low ground floor entry to the piggery at the left end, and a stone stepped ladder provides access to the hennery through a central rectangular bird hole situated just below the eaves. There is evidence of a former small lean-to building on the right end of the wall. The east gable features a blocked soil hole, while the west gable has a tall first floor door, accessible via a stone-built platform and a set of stone steps. This entrance is fitted with an historic plank door. The rear elevation of the animal housing is blind, but the inset rear elevation of the privy has an entrance with a crude lintel and a 20th-century door.

Inside, the ground floor retains at least one original joist, although others have been replaced. The first floor contains timber fittings, including perches along the south wall and remnants of nest boxes against the north wall. Both pitches of the roof structure have been replaced with sawn timbers, and all interior walls are finished with plaster or lime wash. The double privy features a stone flagged front and wooden tops.
