Description

The building is an aisled barn, likely from the 17th century, located north-west of Downham Hall. It is constructed from limestone rubble with sandstone dressings and features a stone slate roof. The north wall includes a wide entrance with long-and-short jambs and a timber lintel. There are shippon doors with chamfered surrounds at each end. To the right of the left-hand door is a window with a plain stone surround, and above it, under a gablet, is a pitching hole with a lintel and sill from the 19th century. To the right of the wide entrance is a later lean-to. Adjoining to the left, at a higher roof level, is a building that was formerly used as a stable. This stable features a 2-light rebated and chamfered mullioned window on the left side, and to the right of the central door is another window with a chamfered surround. Above the door, under a gablet, is a pitching hole with a chamfered stone surround. The central door and a second door on the right both have chamfered stone surrounds.

Inside, the barn consists of seven bays with narrow aisles approximately one metre wide. The aisle posts rest on stone bases and are braced to the tie beams and aisle plates, with some braces being straight and others curved. There are no mortises for aisle ties. The trusses feature light collars and raking queen struts. The purlins and rafters have been replaced with softwood, and repairs to the trusses have also been made with softwood. The upper part of the second truss from the east and the western truss have been entirely replaced. At each end of the barn, there are later shippons with softwood stalls.
