Description

A pair of attached houses built around 1840 in an Italianate style. The houses are stuccoed with a slate hipped roof featuring moulded and bracketed eaves, and have rendered chimney stacks topped with yellow clay pots. They have an overall five-bay front, with the end bays slightly advanced and featuring pilasters. The symmetrical front has stringcourses and sashes without glazing bars within pilastered architraves with bracketed cills; the ground floor windows have round arches with keyblocks and continuous moulded imposts. The ground floor side entrances are round-arched, with later glazed porches. Attached coach houses are set back on either side, with one-storey, one-bay wings that continue the eaves cornice. The left-hand side (No. 5) has a large sash window, while the right-hand side (No. 6) incorporates a later canted bay window. At the rear, the houses have sashes with glazing bars, along with gable-ended service and coach house wings.

The interior of No. 6 retains original joinery, including panelled doors, a staircase with stick balusters and a mahogany handrail with a wreathed curtail and column newels, and plaster ceiling cornices. A range of service rooms is located in the rear wing. The interior of No. 5 was not inspected. These villas are part of a group of similar houses located on Lyndhurst Road.
