Description

Chamberlain's Cottage is a house, now divided into flats, dating from the 17th century with later additions. It is built of cob on a stone plinth and features a thatched gabled-end roof. Originally, the layout consisted of a three-room, cross passage plan, with a lateral back stack and a rear wing, along with a later left-hand extension that is lower and set back, featuring its own brick end stack. The building has two storeys throughout.

The front door is located left of centre and is sheltered by a 20th-century open-framed thatched roof. On the ground floor, there is one window to the left of the door and two to the right. The first floor has four windows, one of which is an 18th-century three-light casement with wooden mullions and leaded panes, all set high beneath eyebrow eaves. The left-hand extension includes a ground floor 10-pane casement window.

The interior, which has not been fully inspected, includes a right-hand ground-floor room with a fireplace featuring Thorverton stone jambs and an unchamfered wooden lintel, as well as a fragment of a stud and cob partition to the right of the cross passage. The building is part of an attractive group with Church View Cottage at the end of the lane leading to the parish church.
