Description
Joan Dewdneys is a house dating from the 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of cob, rendered, on a stone plinth, and features a hipped thatched roof. The building has two storeys throughout and originally followed a three-room, cross passage plan. The front has a four-window range, with 20th-century casement windows on the ground floor and early 19th-century three-light timber casements with six panes per light on the upper floor. The main door, located to the right of centre, marks the original entrance to the cross passage, with a service room to the right that has a large external end stack, and higher rooms to the left. An extreme left-hand doorway leads into a 20th-century extension that contains the current stairs. At the rear, there is a large external double stack to heat the hall and inner room, with an upper stage made of 20th-century brick. Inside, there is a single chamfered beam in the hall, and a change in ceiling level suggests a late floor insertion. Some wide floorboards are present on the upper floor. The roof consists of six bays with principals and collars that are side-pegged and halved, appearing to have been re-roofed in the 19th century. There are also two later sloping buttresses at the rear.
