Description

Oakhay Barton is a farmhouse located in Stoke Canon, with its front range dating back to the early 17th century. The building features 19th-century additions at the rear and a 20th-century porch with a shallow wing at the front. Constructed of stone, it has slate hipped roofs and is two storeys high. The original layout of the old range was a three-room plan with a cross passage.

The front of the house has two window ranges, with the porch and right-hand wing dating from around 1921, featuring 2- and 3-light casements with six panes per light. There are two rear lateral stacks, now internal, with moulded caps, and two brick stacks on the right-hand side. Inside, the left-hand room retains a notable 17th-century fireplace with bead-moulded stone jambs and a chamfered lintel with step stops; the fireplace in the right-hand room has not been inspected.

The mid-19th-century rear wing has a two-window garden range with contemporary timber sashes, each with eight panes. Each section of the house has a separate roof with overhanging eaves. Additionally, a range of cob farm buildings extends from the right-hand side, forming one side of the front garden. Although the name 'Oakhay' is older, the first documentary record of the house dates back to 1633, which may indicate the approximate date of its construction.
