Description

Culm Vale is a house with a core dating from the 17th century, which was completely remodelled and extended around 1863 to 1870. The older section at the rear is constructed of cob with a stone plinth, while the newer additions are made of stuccoed brick. The house features a slate hipped roof with lead rolls on the hips and has a double-depth plan, with the original house forming one wing. It is two storeys tall and has a slightly asymmetrical front facade.

The central doorway is flanked by pilasters and features a rectangular fanlight above fielded panel doors. On either side of the door, there are ground-floor canted bays supported by paired console brackets, which hold up a moulded cornice parapet. The front and canted sides have timber sash windows with radius top corners, all made of single plate glass. Above, there are paired windows with plated timber sashes, a single light window in the centre, and all openings have rounded corners and keystones, with the architrave connected by a platband. The eaves overhang is supported by brackets above an upper string course.

There are side stacks with moulded caps but without pots, and a large axial stack at the rear wing indicates the location of the 17th-century fireplace. Inside, the main rooms from 1863 feature plaster cornices and grey marble chimney-pieces. The rear room contains a 17th-century fireplace with stone jambs and wooden lintels that are unchamfered, along with a side oven.
