Description
The Cottage is a house with a core dating back to the 17th century, which has been significantly enlarged and altered in the 18th century and early 19th century. It is constructed of cob, rendered, and features a thatched gabled-end roof. The building consists of two blocks: one from the 18th or early 19th century facing east, which is attached and parallel to an older block facing west. The older block has a large external lateral stack and remnants of a dismantled left-hand end stack.
On the ground floor, there is a 3-light window to the left of the door, and above it, there are two 3-light windows and one 2-light window. The front of the building has two bays, with two mid-19th century canted bays featuring slated roofs at ground level, below two 20th century 3-light casement windows set under eyebrow eaves, which have scratch-moulded architraves supported on small moulded brackets. There are two end stacks.
At the south-west angle of the block, there is a small timber blind arcade with Tuscan pilasters that frames a back door. The Cottage, formerly known as Tower Lodge, is part of a picturesque group when viewed from the River Exe, alongside the parish church and its associated walling.
