Description

The Avenue is a substantial house located in Brampford Speke. The east wing dates from around 1840, while the north-west wing was added in 1900. The house is rendered and features a slate roof with gabled ends, pierced wavy bargeboards, and end stacks. It has two storeys and was originally symmetrical until the addition of a narrow bay on the north side around 1900, resulting in a layout of three plus one bays.

The central gabled porch is two-storeys high and supported by thin wooden columns and pilasters with cushion capitals and bases. The porch gable features similar bargeboards and a tall wooden finial. The windows are tripartite sashes with glazing bars; the ground floor windows have sills that are almost at ground level and are adorned with cornices on console brackets. The first-floor windows have segmentally arched heads, with the central window above the porch being a single light.

The 1900 additions are substantial and represent a competent piece of asymmetrical, picturesque vernacular revival architecture. Inside, most of the fittings date from around 1900, except for the right-hand ground floor room, which contains 17th-century panelling brought from George Fursden in Cadbury. This room features linenfold panels below and lozenges above on a fluted background, along with a 19th-century Gothick chimney piece and overmantel that appears to date from around 1840.
