Description
Bootham House is a house dating from around the 1830s. It features rendered cob at the base and post and wattle construction at the first floor level, topped with an end gabled slate roof. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays, with a depth of two rooms and a rear extension that includes a former coach-house.
The front of the house is particularly attractive, featuring a centrally located door with four fielded panels and two plain panels, topped by a fanlight. The door is recessed, with panelled reveals and a lintel that has a small hanging semi-circular trellis. On either side of the door are tripartite sash windows, with the centre light being a 12-pane sash. Above, there are three windows: two 12-pane sashes and a central 8-pane sash, all adorned with decorative margin panes. The house also has two dormers with wavy bargeboards, finials, and casements that include glazing bars. The gables are similarly decorated with bargeboards and do not feature windows, but the right-hand gable has a small bell hanging at the apex.
The rear elevation has two windows on the upper level and two below. Inside, the rooms are fitted with single moulded wooden cornices, and the windows have internal shutters and panelled reveals. There is a notable 19th-century black marble chimney piece in the right-hand room, along with a simple contemporary staircase.
