Description

Brampford Speke Post Office is a house that has been converted into a post office, located on a corner site with the right side extending along Chapel Road. The building dates from the 17th century, with some 18th-century additions and heightening. It is constructed of cob, rendered, and sits on a stone plinth. The roof is thatched, hipped at the front and gabled at the rear, with a 20th-century slate-roof extension at the back. The building has two storeys.

The original 17th-century house faced the unnamed street, which is now the front of the post office. It features one shop window to the right of the doorway and a 9-light casement window on the first storey with a lintel at eaves level. The right-hand side, facing Chapel Road, has no windows and includes an internal end stack. This section retains four pairs of principals (partly exposed) and ceiled purlins.

In the 18th century, the roof was raised and the house was extended to the rear, which is indicated by a change in building level towards Chapel Road. This extension has one window on each storey. The 18th-century front faced the left side (to the west) with the main entrance located to the left, behind the original block. An end stack marks the transition between the 18th-century work and the 20th-century extension. The post office is part of an attractive group with Nos. 1 and 2 Pynes Cottage.
