Description

Brampford Speke Church of England Primary School is a school and attached schoolmaster's house built in 1867 by John Hayward, the Exeter diocesan architect. The building is constructed of red brick with black brick detailing and features a gabled-end slate roof. The front of the building has the house on the left, which is two storeys high, and the school on the right, which is one storey. The house has a front with two bays; the right bay is under a separate gable and includes a canted bay window at ground floor level, with a 6-pane casement window above. The left bay has a simple window on each floor, and both bays feature black and red brick window arches. The school section has four large windows and a central buttress, with an angled-brick eaves cornice running throughout. This building is an understated yet effective design by an important local architect and, despite being partially concealed, it faces Taylor's Farmhouse and Homeliving in a central village location. It is included for its group value.
