Description

No 5 Church Lane is a former school and schoolmaster's house, now a residential property, built in 1858 with minor alterations made in 1872. The building is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with limestone dressings, topped by a Collyweston slate roof and featuring ashlar chimneys. It has a T-plan layout, with the schoolmaster's house on the left and a gabled schoolroom projecting to the right.

The schoolmaster's house is one and a half storeys high and has two bays. Each bay features a wooden ground floor window with three arched lights and a relieving arch above, along with a two-light wooden casement window in a gabled semi-dormer. The centre of the façade includes an arched four-panelled door and a smaller two-light casement window located below the eaves.

The gable end of the schoolroom showcases a triple lancet stone window with a taller central light and an arched surround. Above this window, there is a small quatrefoil window and a tall gabled bellcote. All gables are supported by shaped kneelers. The right side of the schoolroom has a gabled porch with a boarded door set in a chamfered stone arch, along with a two-light side window featuring shaped arches. The remainder of the right side has been altered in the 20th century to include new windows and an inserted attic storey for its conversion to a house. This building is included for its group value.
