Description

School with attached Schoolmaster's house, now two houses. Dated 1845; enlarged 1892. Red brick with limestone ashlar dressings and slate roofs.

The building is two storeys with a five-bay front, featuring a steeply pitched stone-coped gable with kneelers and finials. The ashlar-dressed plinth and quoins define the facade, with moulded brick eaves. Twin-flue stacks to the left end and to the right of bay 2 have quoined plinths and octagonal shafts with annulets and cornices.

The School House (2 Spring Lane) occupies bays 1 to 3. The projecting gabled bay to the left has a three-light ashlar-dressed mullion window with moulded cornice. The main doorway to bay 2 has a four-centred arched head with moulded cornice, ashlar-dressed doorcase and part-glazed panelled door. A canted ashlar-dressed bay window to the right has a central two-light mullion window flanked by single lights, with a rectangular sundial above. Above this is a gabled dormer with a two-light window under cornice and a dated shield in the gable.

The Old School (1 High Street) occupies bays 4 and 5 and the east wing. A doorway to bay 4 matches that of the house but has a narrow-panelled door. Bay 5 features a transomed three-light mullion window beneath a gable slit. The large schoolroom has a three-light ashlar-dressed mullion window with transom and moulded cornice.

The east side has two cross-mullioned ashlar-dressed windows with moulded cornices. The east wing of 1892 has ashlar-dressed plinth, quoins and moulded brick eaves. Its doorway to the left has a four-centred arched head with moulded cornice, ashlar-dressed doorcase and plank door, with a cross-mullioned ashlar-dressed window to the right. The steeply pitched gabled east front contains a three-light ashlar-dressed mullion schoolroom window with transom and moulded cornice. Above is a slit light. The gable is topped by an ashlar finial supported by a corbel carved as a man with an open book.
