Description
No. 17 Main Street is a house, which was partly a bakery, with an attached stable range. It dates from the 17th century, with a later plaque dated 1760 below the chimney on the gable end. There have been some 20th-century alterations. The building is constructed of coursed ironstone rubble and has a slate roof with slightly raised eaves and coped gables. There is an ashlar chimney on the right gable, a rebuilt stone chimney between the right bays, and the left gable end is missing its chimney. The house is positioned at right angles to the road and has two storeys with a later attic, featuring three bays. The windows are three-light with ovolo-moulded mullions made of Ketton limestone, and there are two 20th-century single lights inserted into the first floor between the left bays. The right bays have paired 20th-century attic casements in small raking semi-formers. Between the left bays, there is a 20th-century board door and a blocked doorway, both with wooden lintels. The right bay includes a small lean-to at the front and a three-light mullion window on the ground floor of the gable end. There is also a blocked two-light stone mullion window at the rear of the left bay. Attached to the far end of the house is a 19th-century stable range with a corrugated asbestos roof, featuring two stable doors with segmental stone arches, a loft door in between, and a vehicle entry with a wooden lintel to the right. Inside, the centre bay has a stone fireplace with a four-centred arch and a moulded cornice, while the right bay has a moulded rectangular stone fireplace surround.
