Description

Lake Bridge Cottage is a Grade II listed building that was originally three cottages, dating from the 17th century. It features a two-room layout with a rear extension added in the late 18th or early 19th century. The cottage is constructed of cob on a stone plinth and has a thatched gabled-end roof with two end stacks, one of which is external.

The building has two storeys and the window openings have been altered, with two windows on each storey at the front, and most casements are from the 20th century. The original front entrance, which is now blocked and marked by a small window, was located to the right of the current doorway. The present entrance is a two-storey projection that continues under the thatch.

Inside, the right-hand room features a heavy, single-chamfered beam with a bar stop and a fireplace with Thorverton stone jambs and a chamfered wooden lintel that has one surviving scroll stop. The left-hand room also has beams that are chamfered with step stops and a similar fireplace, but it includes a bread-oven door. To the left of the current stairs, which are positioned over the division between the two main rooms, there is a post and plaster partition at first-floor level. The roof of the main block has principal rafters that are tenoned and side pegged, with cob infill above the collars. The northern extension features side-pegged crossed principals and collars.
