Description
The lodge at the entrance to the drive leading to Sidmouth Urban District Offices is an early to mid 19th century building, likely dating from the time Mr. Fish occupied "Knowle Cottage." It is two storeys high, with the first floor situated in the attic. The exterior is constructed of crazed rubble with rough-hewn stone quoins, and it features a plan with steeply pitched hipped and gable end tiled roofs. The bargeboards are decorated with a tracery pattern and finials.
The entrance front has a two-light casement window on the first floor, which includes Gothic glazing and three-centred heads to the lights, set within a stone mullion and surround. On the ground floor, there is a rectangular hipped roof bay on a plinth, with three mullioned lights at the front, mirroring the arrangement on the first floor. A projecting stone porch with traceried bargeboards enhances the gable, and there is a chamfered stone four-centred arched surround to the plank door, which is adorned with ornate iron hinges.
