Description
Claremont is a large stucco villa built around 1830, situated on Station Road. The building has two and three storeys due to the sloping site and may have been enlarged from an earlier structure, as indicated by the stone rubble and brick rear wall. It features a low pitch hipped slate roof with eaves that sweep out on two sides, adorned with a fretted valance that covers a second-floor balcony and a first-floor balcony, which acts as a verandah on the two-storey south side. The supports for these balconies have been renewed.
The three-storey west front displays irregular fenestration, with three windows on the second floor and two on the first floor, featuring flush framed pointed Gothic casements. There is also a canted bay on the second floor with three round-headed lights, the central light being taller, and delicate marginal and intersecting glazing. The entrance is recessed to the left on the first-floor balcony and consists of a four-panel door, two of which are glazed, with sidelights and a pointed fanlight above. The ground floor, which originally housed stables, now contains garages. The two-storey south front has two later French windows on both floors, and the eastern part of the verandah is glazed in. Despite some alterations and modernisation, the villa retains a picturesque quality.
