Cedar Shade Hotel

Cedar Shade Hotel is an early 19th-century villa that stands two storeys tall and is finished in stucco. Originally designed in an L shape, it features a slightly taller projecting block that now serves as the central part of the south front. A two-storey wing was added in 1952, designed to harmonize with the original structure and balance the east wing.

The building has a low-pitched hipped slate roof with very wide bracketed eaves. There are two windows on each wing and two on the central block. The first-floor windows are recessed sashes, most of which retain their glazing bars and feature Venetian shutters. The ground floor has French windows, with those on the wings having marginal glazing, while the two on the central block display a Gothic pattern. The wings and east front have a tent roof and a trellis verandah. The east front includes four similar windows and a recessed door with six flush panels topped by a rectangular fanlight. The two-storey wing to the north has two windows and two dormers.

The hotel is set within a large garden that boasts magnificent cedar trees. Notably, Elizabeth Barrett Browning stayed here with her father and brothers from 1833 to 1835.
