Description

Audley, built circa 1810, was originally designed as a "cottage ornée" and was initially thatched, as evidenced by an old print. The building was altered around 1830. The west-facing entrance front is roughcast and features Doric pilasters. A thin cornice band sits below the parapet with coping, which conceals a low-pitch hipped slate roof. The central three bays of the first floor project, supported by four Greek Doric columns forming a portico. Pilasters are incorporated into the walls at either end of the portico. There are three windows to the centre of the first floor, and one on each side; the right-hand window is blind, while the first-floor window on the left has been converted into a French window. The remaining windows are recessed sashes with intact glazing bars. Behind the portico, the ground floor has two doors of two flush panels each, with large marginal glazed lights set within architrave frames. Between the doors is a round-headed sash window with marginal glazing. A similar sash window has been inserted into the right-hand flanking pilaster. The south garden front features three French windows with marginal glazing on both floors. A very fine iron balcony with a diamond pattern and lead stars is present, sheltered by a tent roof canopy with fretted eaves, supported by openwork ironwork in three stages. The centre of the balcony projects slightly, with a peaked roof and a pair of columns in the foreground. Tall, thin iron columns with Doric capitals support the balcony. Inside, the staircase features a continuous mahogany rail.
