Description

Woodlands Hotel is a building dating from around 1815, originally constructed as a "Cottage ornee" for Lord Gwydir. It features one and two storeys with a rough cast exterior. The building was originally thatched, but now has a mid-19th century roof covered with octagonal slates and hipped gable ends. The roof is adorned with very elaborate foliate carved ridge tiles.

The west garden front showcases three large gabled casement dormers, each with ornate and unusual carved bargeboards and finials, likely added when the slate roof was installed. The ground floor includes five Gothic French windows. The south-facing side elevation features three sash windows with pointed top panes and moulded frames, two of which have similar ornate bargeboards above small gables. There is also a similar sash window and a later rectangular bay with a glazed door on the ground floor.

The entrance front has projecting two-storey wings topped with hipped slate roofs, which also display the same ornate ridge tiles. The right-hand wing includes two gabled casements and two semi-dormers, all with ornate carved bargeboards. The ground floor features a rectangular bay with a three-light Gothic casement, a similar but blind bay with a side door, and a large sash window with Gothic glazing. The left-hand wing has one blind window and a lancet window on the first floor, both with drip moulds above. The ground floor has a rectangular bay with a five-light Gothic casement and a sash window with a pointed top light.

The main block between the wings has a two-light casement with pointed top panes and a drip mould, centrally located on the first floor. The ground floor features a three-bay plain arcade, with the entrance set back and flanked by angled side windows, which are four-centred arched sashes with intersecting glazing bars. The entrance door consists of six moulded panels and is fitted with an ornate lion head knocker. Overall, the building is very picturesque.
