Description
Milestones is a building dating from around 1840, possibly an embellishment of an earlier structure. It features a two-storey stuccoed front that is positioned at right angles to the road, along with a three-storey gabled annexe. The rear is constructed of stone rubble, and the gable ends have slate roofs with ornamental bargeboards and fascia, as well as octagonal chimney pots.
The two-storey section has a three-window front, with two-light Gothic casements that include marginal glazing and heavy cast iron flower guards on the first floor. The ground floor features a glazed tent roof verandah, two marginal glazed Gothic French windows, and a central door with six moulded panels. The annexe has two-light casements at the front and single casements on the side, all with marginal Gothic glazing. There are two windows facing the road, which have marginal glazed sashes with hoof moulds. The property formerly had a rustic flint garden wall.
Milestones is a typical house of Sidmouth and is part of a group with Gwydir Cottage, Cypress House, Nos 1 and 2 Cypress Place, and Town House, alongside Larbi Cote on the opposite side of Station Road.
