Description
The Temple in the grounds of West Bank School is a mid-19th century classical circular structure located on a hill to the northwest of the school. It is constructed from ashlar stone and stands on a plinth of three steps. The rear half of the perimeter is enclosed, while the front half features four free-standing and two engaged giant Tuscan columns with moulded bases. Above the columns is an entablature with a moulded cornice, topped by a low ashlar dome. The entablature is also repeated on the interior. There is no additional decoration or moulding, but a semi-circular stone bench is set against the rear wall, with its back projecting from the wall and featuring moulded coping. The bench is supported by two shaped fluted brackets, and each end has scrolled armrests. The temple is beautifully situated, surrounded by a semi-circle of yew trees, offering a magnificent view over Sidmouth Bay.
