Description

Ridges is a house dating from the early 17th century or earlier, built with roughcast cob on stone footings and featuring a hipped thatched roof with a gabled end on the rear wing. It likely follows a three-room, through-passage plan, with the service end located to the right of the passage and a rear service wing. The house has rendered brick shafts for the axial hall stack, an external service end stack that includes a bulge for a bake oven, and a stack at the end of the rear wing. Originally, the stairs were situated behind the axial stack.

The building has two storeys and an irregular five-window range on the front. On the first floor, there are mostly two-light casement windows, except for a later single-light window, all positioned under eyebrow eaves. The ground floor features five two-light casement windows, with the one to the left of the axial stack appearing to be a blocked door. There is a verandah supported by simple posts. The right-hand end of the house has two two-light casement windows on each floor, with noticeable brick and cobble patching. The rear includes slated and tiled lean-tos with a separate stack and two-light casement windows.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have a hall with a chamfered cross ceiling beam that has scroll stops, and fireplace lintels with stops and bars. The rear wing features a chamfered cross beam with scroll stops and a chamfered lintel over a blocked end fireplace.
