Description

Virginia Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, constructed with roughcast cob on stone footings and featuring a gabled-end slate roof. The house has a three-room plan, with heated rooms at either end and an unheated service room in the middle; a passage has likely been added between the service room and the hall on the left. An external end stack heats the hall, while an internal end stack heats the right-hand room, both having brick shafts. The building is two storeys high and has a front with a four-window range. The outer first-floor windows are located under weatherboarded gables, while the two central windows are beneath a larger weatherboarded gable. The windows are 19th-century two or three-light casements, and each of the main ground-floor rooms has a three-light casement window. The doorway is situated under a lean-to slate porch.

The interior has not been inspected, but Dr. Alcock notes that there is one and a half chamfered beams in the hall with scroll stops, and the fireplace lintel is similarly decorated. The other heated room features one chamfered beam and a half beam with rounded stops, and its fireplace lintel is chamfered with scroll stops. There are remains of jointed crucks, five in total, which were largely dismantled in 1940.
