Description

A row of four cottages located on Sowton Lane, partly dating from the mid-17th century with a later 19th-century extension. The construction is roughcast cob on stone footings, with gabled-end thatched roofs. Numbers 14 and 15, which adjoin the Village Hall, were likely originally a two-room house from the mid-17th century. The two prominent external rear lateral brick stacks may be early examples of brickwork in Devon, dating back to 1646, as referenced by N W Alcock. Numbers 16 and 17 are probably mid-19th-century additions. The row now comprises four double-depth cottages, each with a single room and entrance hall width. The cottages are two stories high. The front elevation has a six-window range, with two-light casement windows on the first floor beneath projecting eyebrow eaves. Planked doors are present at numbers 15 and 17; numbers 14 and 16 have 20th-century porches. A right-hand end stack serves number 17. The rear lateral external stacks have bases constructed from coursed Heavitree stone.
