Description
Clystbeare and Clystbeare Cottages are two cottages that were originally a single farmhouse, which at some point served as four or five cottages. The building likely has an early 17th century core with later 17th century additions, including a room to the left and a rear wing to the right, as well as 19th century extensions. It is constructed of plastered cob on stone footings, with brick stacks and shafts, and features a hipped thatched roof.
Initially, it was a two-room house without a passage, which was extended to the left and rear in the late 17th century. There are two datestones on two stacks, dated 1656 and 1657, but these are not in their original positions, and the brickwork suggests a later date in the 17th century. These stacks serve the rear wing and likely the left-hand room, although this is not entirely clear. The earlier core had an external end stack that heated the right-hand room.
The building has two storeys and a front with a regular four-window range; the first-floor windows are all three-light with eyebrow eaves, while there are five ground-floor windows, all of 20th century timber casements, and no doors. The rear features one early 17th century two-light window under the eaves, with the rest of the fenestration being 19th or 20th century for the main range and the rear wing, which has a lean-to attached to its inner side. The rear external stack is broad with large set-offs. The interior has not been inspected, but it is noted that there are two ground floor ceiling beams that are chamfered and unstopped.
