Description

Starr's Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the early to mid 17th century, with later alterations. It is constructed of plastered cob and Heavitree stone, featuring a brick outshut and a gabled-end thatched roof. The house has a 2-room, through-passage plan, with the hall on the left and the parlour on the right of the passage, both heated by external end stacks. There is an unheated room at the rear of the parlour, likely originally a dairy, and a later brick outshut at the rear of the hall that contains two service rooms.

The building is two storeys high, with a nearly symmetrical front that has a three-window range. The first floor includes one three-light and two four-light casement windows, while there is one four-light casement window on either side of the doorway, which features a segmental arch. All windows have brick surrounds and arches. On the left side, there is a two-light casement window on the first floor and a 20th-century window in the outshut, whose slated roof nearly reaches the eaves of the main range. The right end has a thatched wing with a three-light casement window on both floors.

Inside, only the hall was inspected, where several features noted by Dr. Alcock remain in place. These include three chamfered ceiling beams, a fireplace lintel, and a post between the doors to the two service rooms, along with a lintel across them, indicating the presence of a 17th-century service area before the outshut was rebuilt in brick. The parlour has two ovolo moulded ceiling beams with complex stops, and the roof features two jointed crucks, one towards the ends of each of the principal rooms.
