Description
Colhay is a house dating from the early 17th century, constructed from rendered and painted stone rubble and cob, with asbestos slates on the lower right side. It features projecting stone rubble end stacks with brick shafts, as well as a brick shaft for the rear lateral hall stack. The layout consists of three rooms and a cross passage, with the ground sloping down to the right. The entrance is located to the left of center, making the hall lower than the entrance. The left room is heated by an end stack, the hall by a rear lateral stack, and the inner room on the right by another end stack.
There is a one-room plan wing at the rear of the passage and hall, which may have originally served as a stair projection but is now used as a scullery. Another one-room plan wing at the back of the inner room is heated by a large end stack and appears to be from the 19th century, although it might have earlier origins as a service wing. A 19th-century outshut is present at the rear of the left room. The house underwent partial remodelling in the late 19th century, dividing it into two separate homes, with the inner room and rear service wing designated as one house and the hall, passage, and left room as another.
The exterior is two storeys high with an asymmetrical three-window front, again sloping down to the right. The entrance is to the left of center, featuring a part-glazed 20th-century door flanked by a 19th-century 24-pane sash window on the left and a 20th-century window lighting the hall on the right. There is also a part-glazed plank door to the far right. The ground floor windows and door on the right have slate drip moulds above them. The first floor is lit by two 20th-century two-light casements, with an additional two-light casement to the right. Inside, an early 20th-century stair has been inserted in the passage, and the fireplaces have been blocked with 20th-century grates. The heavy chamfered floor joists in the front range have stepped stops. The roof structure has not been inspected.
