Description

The Tithe Barn, located 150 metres southeast of Bishop's Court, is a former tithe barn that likely dates back to the early 14th century. It is constructed of rubble sandstone and features a gabled end with a pantiled roof. The barn has a rectangular plan measuring 90 feet by 24 feet, although it may have originally been 115 feet long and included a central cross entry.

The exterior is characterized by buttresses with two set-offs, with the east end featuring one central buttress and two diagonal buttresses. There are ventilation slits positioned between the buttresses, and some later doorways, including one with an elliptical arch.

Inside, there are some later partitions and partial flooring. The roof consists of seven bays and is built using a base cruck construction, or possibly middle cruck construction according to Mercer's terminology. It has a conventional cruck structure below the collar, featuring square-set purlins, arched bracing, and wind braces, with the crucks set on templates approximately 5 feet above ground level. Above the collar, the roof adopts a cannon rafter type with queen posts, upper purlins, and bearers at either end. The original construction is preserved at the west end, where two vertical timbers rest on the lintels of the ventilator slits, supporting the ends of the middle purlins with a collar above. Straight braces connect these posts to the collars and to the purlin.
