Description

SOWTON SX 99 SE 1/27 Ivington Farmhouse - GV II

Farmhouse. Built in 1846 as part of the planned Home Farm of the Garretts of Bishop's Court. Brick in Flemish bond; hipped slate roof with lead rolls to hips and ridge and with overhanging eaves. Double-depth plan, the principal rooms on either side of the front entrance, the service rooms to the rear facing the farmyard buildings (q.v.); the house is heated by 2 internal stacks to either end. 2 storeys. Front: symmetrical, 3 bays, the central bay projecting slightly and separately gabled, with a porch, the roof of which forms an open pediment, with a round-headed doorway and keystone. All first floor windows, of 2 lights, the casements early C20, under depressed window arches; 2-light casement ground-floor window to side bays, with depressed window arches and keystone, the casements late C20. A small single-light late C20 window has been inserted immediately to the right of the porch. Rear: irregular, with three 2-light C19 casement windows to first floor (and a single light C20 window in addition), with 2 doors and 3 windows below. The house forms one side (north-east) of a very well-preserved planned farmstead, all of the same date.
