Description
Myrtle Cottage is a combined dwelling, originally two houses, dating from the early 19th century. Number 29 is a remodel of an earlier building, while Myrtle Cottage may be entirely of 19th-century origin, with later 19th or 20th-century alterations. The construction is plastered cob on stone footings, with gabled-end roofs: the pantiles on Number 29 contrast with the tiles and crested ridge tiles of Myrtle Cottage. Number 29 is a single-room-width building. Myrtle Cottage, which projects forward of Number 29, has a double-depth plan with the main rooms on either side of an entrance positioned right of centre; the staircase is likely situated behind the entrance hall. A right-hand end stack and a rear lateral stack provide heat to the right and left-hand rooms respectively, while an axial stack serves Number 29. Both houses have two storeys, with Number 29’s roof ridge significantly lower than Myrtle Cottage’s. The front of Number 29 features tall 19th-century, two-light casement windows on both the first and ground floors. Myrtle Cottage has an asymmetrical, four-window facade under two large gable ends, with the gable walls, including the end gable walls, weatherboarded. The first floor windows are two-light casements with glazing bars arranged in pointed arches and margin panes. Three similar windows are on the ground floor. A porch has a moulded entablature and clustered columns. A further window, matching the others, is located on the left-hand end.
