Description
Craig's Cottages is a row of three cottages located set back from the village street in Sowton Bishop’s Clyst. The building’s origins lie in a late 16th-century house, which was remodelled in the 17th century, with further alterations carried out later. The walls are roughcast cob, resting on stone footings, and the roof is gabled with synthetic slate. The original plan is uncertain, but it is now a four-room house in a straight block. There is one axial and two end stacks, which have brick shafts. The cottages have two storeys, and the front features a seven-window range; all windows (five on the ground floor) and the three doors are 20th-century additions.
The rear of the right-hand cottage (number 3) has a 17th-century three-light timber window with a cyma recta surround and ovolo moulded jambs and mullions. The roof extends the entire length of the row and is the earliest part of the building. Within number 3, two jointed cruck trusses are visible, with principals that are chamfered, morticed, and pegged at the apex and half-dovetailed at the collars. The principal ground floor room in number 3 has one and two half beams, chamfered with scroll stops; a similar ceiling beam also exists in the chamber above this room. A Heavitree stone fireplace is served by the axial stack. Other internal features, including a moulded wall plate, have been lost.
