Description
Linden Lee is a detached cottage built between 1800 and 1837, as evidenced by Ordnance Survey maps and tithe maps. The walls are of roughcast cob on stone footings, with a thatched roof that is half-hipped on the left side and gabled on the right. The cottage originally comprised two rooms. The right-hand room has an external end stack with an offset and brick shaft for heating. The front elevation displays a symmetrical two-window range, featuring two-light casement windows from the 19th century, each with six panes. A wide central doorway provides access. A 20th-century single-storeyed extension, with a pantiled roof, has been added to the right, containing a bathroom and storage space. A 20th-century window is present in the left-hand gable wall. Internally, the roof has three trusses with straight principals. The apex carpentry is presumed to be crossed and bolted, though it is not visible. Linden Lee represents a well-preserved example of a house plan and structure demonstrating the continuity of traditional building methods and designs from the 17th to the 19th centuries, as noted by N W Alcock in "Houses in an East Devon Parish" (1962).
