Description

CLIFTON PLACE 1. 1633 The Rock Cottage SY 1287 1/47 12.10.51. II GV 2. Detached stucco house, 2 storeys and attic. Early C19 "cottage ornee" style with thatched roof and projecting bracketed eaves. Semi-circular 3 -light dormers. Polygonal chimney pots with terracota ornament. 4 window elevation to sea with good ground floor verandah. Tudor heads to 2-light casements with drip moulds. The 3 centre bays of verandah break forward and it is partly returned to sides. Open work square section supports and leaded roof. The front to Peak Hill Road has a projecting central gabled bay. Later alterations have been made to this front which has leaded Tudor style fenestration. The house forms part of a group, between the cliff edge and Peak Hill Road at the west end of the Esplanade, that is one of Sidmouth's most characteristic features.
