Description
The Rock Cottage is a detached stucco house dating from the early 19th century, designed in the "cottage ornee" style. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring a thatched roof with projecting bracketed eaves. The cottage includes semi-circular three-light dormers and polygonal chimney pots adorned with terracotta ornamentation. The sea-facing elevation has four windows and a notable ground floor verandah. The verandah, which has Tudor heads on its two-light casements with drip moulds, breaks forward in the three central bays and extends partially to the sides, supported by open work square section supports and topped with a leaded roof. The front facing Peak Hill Road features a projecting central gabled bay, which has undergone later alterations, including leaded Tudor style windows. The Rock Cottage is part of a group of buildings situated between the cliff edge and Peak Hill Road at the west end of the Esplanade, contributing to one of Sidmouth's most characteristic features.
