Description
Clifton House, located at No. 3 Clifton Place, dates back to 1633 and was formerly known as the Clifton Hotel. It was partly destroyed by fire shortly after World War II. The building features a gable end slate roof that has replaced the original thatch. The west end facing the road has been raised to two storeys with a gable. The sea front retains part of the original two-storey elevation, which is stuccoed. There are three windows on this elevation, with the outer ones set in slightly bowed bays. Modern Georgian canopies cover the doorways. On the first floor, there are four windows, while the ground floor has three, all of which are sash windows with glazing bars, facing Peak Hill Road. Clifton House is part of a group of buildings situated between the cliff edge and Peak Hill Road at the west end of the Esplanade, which is one of Sidmouth's most distinctive features.
