Description
Clifton Lodge is a building located at No 2 Clifton Place, dating from probably the 18th century with later alterations. It is two storeys high, with the east end being one storey due to the sloping site. The exterior is rough cast, and it features a thatched roof. The front facing the sea has four windows, including three canted bays that are three storeys high, with sash windows, some of which still have intact glazing bars. A notable feature is the good trellis porch with a tent roof, decorated with fretwork in a trefoil and fleur-de-lis pattern. The road-facing side has sash windows set in moulded frames, also with intact glazing bars. There is a recessed door with four panels, two of which are glazed. Clifton Lodge is part of a group of buildings that contribute to the character of Sidmouth, located between the cliff edge and Peak Hill Road at the west end of the Esplanade.
