Description
The Beacon is a detached house located at Clifton Place, built around 1840. It shows influences of Swiss Chalet architecture and is slightly later in construction than other houses in the area. The house features a stucco exterior, full-width gables with deep verge soffits, and wavy bargeboards. It has a thatched roof and chimneys topped with projecting crenellated coping.
Positioned at an angle to the cliff and the road, the southeast front has three storeys with two pointed windows that have diamond glazing in the casements. There is a verandah and a first-floor balcony with iron balustrades, supported by columns that extend to the gable. The southwest front, which faces the sea, has a possibly altered arrangement of windows. The first floor features a canted rectangular stucco bay with a tent roof, while the ground floor has a bowed center also topped with a tent roof. The windows here include transomed casements with diamond glazing, and the pointed heads are present on the first-floor bay windows. The entrance is located on the northeast side.
