Description
1 Clifton Place is a building dating from 1633, likely with origins in the 18th century and featuring later alterations. It is a two-storey structure with stucco cladding and a single window gable end facing down the Esplanade. The building has slightly bowed sash windows, with the glazing bars still intact. The front, which faces the sea, has two windows with similar sash designs and intact glazing bars. There is a former trellis porch that has been boarded and glazed, topped with a tent-shaped roof. The roof has been replaced with slate, moving away from thatch, and features wide bracketed eaves. This house is part of a group of buildings located between the cliff edge and Peak Hill Road at the western end of the Esplanade, which is one of Sidmouth's most characteristic features. All the listed buildings in Clifton Place form a group.
