Description
This is a garden wall located on the south side of Church Road in Lympstone, possibly dating from the 16th century or later. It is constructed of red sandstone coursed rubble, with some brick and limestone incorporated. The wall features remnants of a chamfered plinth that returns at the west end, as well as remains of chamfered coping, with the upper parts made of brick in Flemish bond. The east corner has upper courses made of limestone. The east perimeter wall that encloses the garden of Southerleigh is a later addition, made of brick with coursed limestone towards the south end. The original purpose of the sandstone section of the wall is unclear, as there are no signs of former abutments or embrasures. The detailing suggests it may date from the 16th or 17th century. This wall is part of an attractive group that includes The Redwing Public House, Southerleigh, Varnes, and Shepherds.
