Description
Nos 4 and 5 on High Street are an early 19th-century pair of small houses and shops, possibly refronted from an earlier building. They are two storeys high and have a stucco facade with a gable end slate roof featuring moulded eaves. Each house has two windows on the first floor, with recessed sashes and intact glazing bars; one window on No 4 is bowed, which is the location of Holmes Butchers. No 4 retains its original 19th-century butcher's shop front, although it has been glazed in while maintaining period character through the use of glazing bars. The shop front includes a projecting counter with a brass nameplate and a brass column supporting a projecting moulded blind case with a heavy moulded cornice. The original shop door has two flush panels, with the upper part slatted for ventilation. The double doors to the right are set to be converted into a bow window. The shop front of No 5 has been modernized in the late 19th century.
