Description
This barn, located approximately 60 metres south-east of Hayes Barton, dates from the late 17th century and was reroofed in the 19th century. It is constructed of local brick in Flemish bond, with some areas patched using 19th-century brick, and features a brick plinth on stone rubble footings. The roof is slate, although it was likely thatched originally.
The barn is a double threshing barn oriented on a north-west to south-east axis, with two pairs of large opposing doorways leading to the threshing floors. It has a gable-end design with symmetrical long sides, each consisting of eight bays arranged as two bays, a doorway, two bays, another doorway, and two bays. Each bay includes a narrow ventilator high in the wall, and the bays are separated by buttresses with slated weathered offsets.
All doorways are full height and flanked by short projecting midstrey walls. The double doors, which date from the 19th century, are plank doors, with one split into flaps. The eaves extend down slightly as hoods over the doorways. Each gable end features shaped kneelers and coping, and contains three ventilator slits. The interior is open from the ground to the roof and has a 19th-century replacement roof supported by scissor-braced trusses.
